Recording Now Available: The State of U.S. COVID-19 Treatment Clinical Trials Public Webinar

A recording for CTTI’s public webinar, The State of U.S. COVID-19 Treatment Clinical Trials, held Apr. 15, is now available. In the webinar, moderated by CTTI Acting Executive Director Leanne Madre, CTTI presented findings from an analysis of data downloaded from the database for the Aggregate Analysis of ClinicalTrials.gov (AACT) on the state of U.S. COVID-19 treatment studies. The presentation included an overview of the U.S. COVID-19 clinical trials landscape, the availability of results, and changes in the portfolio as time has progressed. The presenters – Robert Califf, Verily and Google Health; Harlan Krumholz, Yale School of Medicine; and Deborah Zarin, Multi-Regional Clinical Trials Center of Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard University – discussed how the findings from the analysis can be applied to improvements needed across the clinical trials enterprise.

Upgraded AACT Database Offers Improved Functionality for Analyzing ClinicalTrials.gov Data

CTTI has launched an upgraded version of its Aggregate Analysis of ClinicalTrials.gov (AACT) database, which provides an analyzable dataset of all study information (including results) contained in ClinicalTrials.gov. These data can be used to characterize the clinical trials landscape and evaluate trends over time. CTTI gathered user feedback to design enhancements to the tool that would improve the timeliness of data, increase functionality, and make it accessible to a broader group of users.

For years, AACT has been used to uncover insights about the state of clinical trials. The datasets have been downloaded over 17,000 times and resulted in more than 20 publications. With these improvements, AACT will continue to be a valuable resource for assessing the clinical trial enterprise. For example, with the new NIH policy and the Final Rule for FDAAA 801 in effect for clinical trial results reporting, there is an opportunity for more organizations to use this timely and easily accessible data to monitor their compliance.

Previously updated twice per year, the database now resides in the cloud and is refreshed nightly with data from ClinicalTrials.gov. Historical AACT datasets also remain available for comparison. Researchers can query the database directly or download it as a static dataset. The new version of AACT is based on open-source technologies and requires no proprietary software.

Updated AACT Database Now Available & Ripe for Mining

The latest version of the AACT Database is now available on the CTTI website, along with the supporting documents.

CTTI’s State of Clinical Trials Project updates the Aggregate Analysis of ClincalTrials.gov (AACT) database twice annually. AACT is a restructured and reformatted relational database developed using publicly available and downloadable data from ClinicalTrials.gov. Since its initial release, the AACT database has been used to answer many questions regarding the landscape of clinical trials.

This latest dataset reflects data downloaded from ClinicalTrials.gov on March 27, 2016. To assist users with the interpretation of the data, a comprehensive data dictionary and points to consider document are also available on the CTTI website. Previous versions of AACT are posted as well.

Updated AACT Database Now Available on the CTTI Website

CTTI’s State of Clinical Trials Project set out to facilitate the analyses of data in ClinicalTrials.gov, by creating the database for Aggregate Analysis of ClincalTrials.gov (AACT), a restructured and reformatted relational database developed using publicly available and downloadable data from ClinicalTrials.gov. Since the original AACT was created in 2010, we’ve continued to regularly issue updated versions of the database.

The latest version of the AACT Database is now available on the CTTI website, along with the supporting documents. This dataset reflects data downloaded from ClinicalTrials.gov in September 2015. To assist users with the interpretation of the data, a comprehensive data dictionary and points to consider document are also available on the CTTI website. Previous versions of AACT are posted as well.

Since CTTI released the first AACT database five years ago, it has been utilized to answer many questions regarding the landscape of clinical trials.

We are pleased to announce that new features to assist usability accompany the most recent AACT Database. Please see the Points to Consider Document for more details. These features include:

  • An additional “readme” document is included in the pipe-delimited text files zip file for users who plan to work with the data extracts in the R statistical computing environment.
  • A target duration (e.g. 180 Days) variable is now included for records where the STUDY_TYPE=”Observational [Patient Registry]”.
  • New “Delayed Results” data elements are included in the pipe-delimited text files and SAS CPORT transport files. This includes a list of studies, provided by the National Library of Medicine, that had submitted a certification or extension request to the 12-month results reporting requirement before September 27, 2014, and the date of the first certification or extension request. For further details, refer to the “readme” documents within the zip files.
