Carter Hemion (they/he) is a writer, artist, and rare disease patient advocate. After getting diagnosed with multiple rare diseases, Carter transitioned from journalism to patient advocacy. They currently serve as the Community Engagement Director for Immunocompromised Association to raise awareness, promote education, and foster community connections. They also organize at the intersection of rare disease and LGBTQIA+ identity as a Pride in Rare volunteer with the EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases and received a RareVoice Award in 2023 for their advocacy empowering diverse voices. They are also passionate about the intersection of disability with neurodivergence and mental health because of their experiences with neuropsychiatric symptoms and advocacy within autistic spaces. Carter is also a member of EveryLife's RDLA, YARR, and Speakers' Bureau programs.
Carter especially enjoys using storytelling to raise awareness and advocate for disabilities as an author, artist, and speaker. They have spoken about their experiences with disabilities at conferences, radio and podcast shows, and other events. In Washington state, they volunteer with the NW Rare Disease Coalition and NORD for rare disease health equity. Carter also collaborates with researchers and medical experts as a DOD CDMRP Consumer Reviewer and as the Patient Expert for the Classical Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome Working Group in the International Consortium on EDS & HSD hosted by the Ehlers-Danlos Society.
